Well my name's John Lee Pettimore Same as my Daddy and his Daddy before You hardly ever saw grandaddy down here He only come to town about twice a year He'd buy a hundred pounds of yeast and some copper line Everybody knew that he made moonshine Now the revenue man wanted grandad bad He headed up the holler with everything he had 'fore my time but I've been told He never come back from Copperhead Road Now Daddy ran the whiskey in a big block Dodge Bought it at an auction at the mason's lodge Johnson County sheriff painted on the side Just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside Well him and my uncle tore that engine down I still remember that rumblin' sound Then the sheriff came around in the middle of the night Heard mama cryin', knew something wouldn't right He was headed down to Knoxville with the weekly load You could smell the whiskey burnin' down Copperhead Road I volunteered for the army on my birthday They draft the white trash first, 'round here anyway I done two tours of duty in Vietnam I came home with a brand new plan I'd take the seed from Colombia and Mexico Just plant it up the holler down Copperhead Road Now the D.E.A.'s got a chopper in the air I wake up screaming like I'm back over there I learned a thing or two from Charlie don't you know You better stay away from Copperhead Road Copperhead Road Copperhead Road Copperhead Road

Me and Billy the Kid never got along I didn't like the way he cocked his hat and he wore his gun all wrong. We had the same girlfriend and he never forgot it She had a cute little Chihuahua until one day he up and shot it He rode the hard country down the New Mexico line He had a silver pocketwatch that he never did wind. He crippled the piano player for playin' his favorite song No, Me and Billy the Kid never got along Me and Billy the Kid never got along I didn't like the way he parted his hair and he wore his gun all wrong He was bad to the bone All hopped up on speed. I would've left him alone If it wasn't for that Senorita He gave her silver and he paid her hotel bill But it was me she loved and she said she always will. I'd always go and see her when Billy was gone Yeah, Me and Billy the Kid never got along Me and Billy the Kid never got along I didn't like the way he tied his shoes and he wore his gun all wrong One day I said to Billy "I've got this foolproof scheme" We'll rob Wells Fargo "It's bustin at the seams." I admit that I framed him but I don't feel bad Cause the way I was livin' was drivin' me mad Billy reached for his gun but his gun was on wrong Yeah, Me and Billy the Kid never got along Me and Billy the Kid never got along But I did like the way he swayed in the wind While I played him his favorite song Now my baby sings harmony with me To "La Cucaracha" She winds her silver pocket watch And pets her new Chihuahua I moved in to the Hotel and got a room with a shower We lay and listen to that watch tick hour after hour Outside I hear the wind blowin' o so strong Me and Billy the Kid never got along

Oooh I sometimes lose my faith in luck I don't know what I want to be when I grow up I just count the rain Wearing the floor through the boards again I wish I could find a soul to steal I could be the engine, you could be the wheel When we're driving home, I never have to worry about being alone [CHORUS:] Oooh, follow my tracks See all the times I should have turned back Oooh, I wept alone I know what it means to be on my own Oooh, the things I have known Looks like I'm taking the hard way home Oooh, the seeds I've sown Taking the hard way home Taking the hard way home I never did learn how to follow the rules I never was good at sleeping while the moon was full I just lie and burn Wreck my mind while the planet turns I sometimes wish I could start again I'd try and do the right things every now and then I'd step in line That's what I would do if I could turn back time [CHORUS:] Oooh, follow my tracks See all the times I should have turned back Oooh, I wept alone I know what it means to be on my own Oooh, the things I have known Looks like I'm taking the hard way home Oooh, the seeds I've sown Taking the hard way home Taking the hard way home ooooooooooooh I tell you how I want to live Forget about the take Forget about the give I want to leave this town Fake my death and never be found [CHORUS:] Oooh, follow my tracks See all the times I should have turned back Oooh, I wept alone I know what it means to be on my own Oooh, the things I have known Looks like I'm taking the hard way home Oooh, the seeds I've sown Taking the hard way home Taking the hard way home I sometimes lose my faith in luck I don't know what I want to be when I grow up I just count the rain Wearing the floor through the boards again I wish I could find a soul to steal I could be the engine, you could be the wheel When we're driving home, I never have to worry about being alone [CHORUS:] Oooh, the things I have known Looks like I'm taking the hard way home Oooh, the seeds I've sown Taking the hard way home Taking the hard way home Taking the hard way home

A long time forgotten Are dreams that just fell by the way And the good life he promised Ain't what she's living today But she never complains of The bad times or bad things he's done, Lord She's just talks about the good times They've had and all the good times to come She's a good hearted woman In love with a good timin' man She loves him in spite of his ways That she don't understand Through teardrops and laughter They'll pass though his world hand in hand A good hearted woman Lovin' her good timin' man He likes the night life The brightlights and good timin' friends When the party's all over She welcome him back home again Lord knows she don't understand him But she does the best that she can 'Cause she's a good hearted woman She loves her good timin' man She's a good hearted woman In love with a good timin' man And she loves him in spite of his wicked ways That she don't understand Through teardrops and laughter They'll pass though his world hand in hand A good hearted woman Lovin' her good timin' man She's a good hearted woman In love with a good timin' man She loves me in spite of my wicked ways That she don't understand Through teardrops and laughter They'll pass though this world hand in hand Lord A good hearted woman Lovin' her good timin' man

I dreamed about killing you again last night And it felt alright to me Dying on the banks of embarcadero skies I sat and watched you bleed Buried you alive in a fireworks display Raining down on me You cold, hot blood ran away from me To the sea I painted my name on the back of a leaf And I watched it float away The hope I had in a notebook full of white, dry pages Was all I tried to save But the wind blew me back via Chicago In the middle of the night And all without fight At the crush of veils and starlight I know I'll make it back One of these days and turn on your TV To watch a man with a face like mine Being chased down a busy street When he gets caught, I wont get up And I wont go to sleep I'm coming home I'm coming home Via Chicago Where the cups are cracked and hooked Above the sink they make me think Crumbling ladder tears don't fall They shine down your shoulders Crawling is screw faster lash I blow it with kisses I rest my head on a pillow star And a cracked door moon That says I haven't gone too far I'm coming home I'm coming home I'm coming home Via Chicago I'm coming home I'm coming home I'm coming home Searching for a home Searching for a home Searching for a home Via Chicago I'm coming home I'm coming home

I heard you crying loud, all the way across town Cause you been searching for that someone And it's me out on the prowl As you sit around feeling sorry for yourself Well, don't get lonely now, and dry your whining eyes I'm just roaming for the moment Sleazin' my back yard so don't get So uptight you been thinking about ditching me No time to search the world around 'Cause you know where I'll be found When I come around Well, I heard it all before, so don't knock down my door I'm a loser and a user so I don't need no accuser To try and slag me down because I know you're right So go do what you like, make sure you do it wise You may find out that your self-doubt means nothing Was ever there You can't go forcing something if it's just not right No time to search the world around 'Cause you know where I'll be found When I come around No time to search the world around 'Cause you know where I'll be found When I come around When I come around
