Graduated high school and ’88
Dropped out of college at Eastern State
Married my wife when the wall came down
We had us a boy and we stayed in this town

Took work at the mill back in ‘95
There was nothing in my mind but staying alive
Losing your dreams is a bitter pill

A few years later had a little girl
The pay don’t change and that’s the way of the world
You try and get by with a little less
That’s no new shoes and no new dress

Baby’s crying in the middle of the night
Brings me back to my little life
Never once thought of what I could be

Now I wonder what’s left of me
Years went by and my boy grew up
He had nothing so he signed up
It was too long before they tore that mill down

They closed the doors and they killed this town
I told my wife we would be fine
My pension would keep us from the welfare line
Then I heard on the news today

A man in New York is trying to make us pay
My little girl’s got a life to live
And I’ll be damned if I can’t give
Hot food on her pate and a future that’s bright
I got a plan to make things right

Desperation makes a lonely man
With my heart on my sleeve and a gun in my hand
