lyrics

Wake me up early, watching the sunrise
It bleeds into morning and grows all the time
I feed up the horses, I water the south end
This earth is my lover, and I hold it real tight

The fields gotten thinner, since the time of my father
I was just a boy then, but he taught me real well
There’s blood in the river, it ruins the soil
All my friends around me, they see fit to sell

For me it ain’t that simple, this land’s all I got now
Like all who come before me, I’ll work until I die
They don’t make it easy, the cities and the factories
They piss into the river, they steal the water from the sky

But all I see is sunshine, this old tractor runs fine
There’s clouds on the horizon, I pray they come our way
The dust is all around me, its so thick that I can’t see
Where the hell I’m going, or which way I should go

Well I am a farmer, I live in the valley
I live off the water, I live off the land
Won’t you hear my voice now, won’t you feel my heart beating?
This earth is my lifeblood and you hold it in your hands

So when you think of summertime, cold ice cream and peach pie
Knee high by the fourth of July, won’t you throw a prayer my way?
When you wake early, turn south and you will see
A man down on bended knee, throwing all his prayers away
