Judgment Day
04:19
|
|||
Do your recall the news today
Or listen to the words I say
Theirs a man that says that I should pray
Prepare my soul for judgment day
Ooh, Ooh
But there are people living in the streets
Without enough food to eat
And I see their faces every day
How they stay alive I cant say
The Devil walks down every road
And looks for those who’ll sell their soul
For riches now he’ll pay in gold
And cashes in when we are old
The politicians in the news
Don’t walk around in warn out shoes
But those who come in last today
Will be the first on judgment day
Ooh, Ooh
Last night I dreamed in black and white
With no regret to satisfy
And the ones I’d loved who’d gone before
Were there and they all seamed so poor
Then all their eyes turned into red
And I realized that I was dead
So I got down on my knees to pray
But they just turned and walked away
Do your recall the news today
Or listen to the words I say
Theirs a man that says that I should pray
Prepare my soul for judgment day

Softened Soil
02:02
|
|||
Digging through the boxes in the hall
Giving up the Autumn for the Fall
Going through our things finding rungs and rings
Lay me down in softened soil
Turning over letters in your hand
Remembering the well-intentioned plans
Life had bubbled up till it spilled our cup
Lay me down in softened soil
Mug inside the cupboard I won’t use
I hate it, but every night I watch the news
Like books worn soft, old tattered cloth
Lay me down in softened soil
You were brave as you had ever been
The bad news then causing you to grin
When came the day you knew what to say:
‘Lay me down in softened soil,
Lay me down in softened soil’

Farmer's Prayer
03:50
|
|||
Wake me up early, watching the sunrise
It bleeds into morning and grows all the time
I feed up the horses, I water the south end
This earth is my lover, and I hold it real tight
The fields gotten thinner, since the time of my father
I was just a boy then, but he taught me real well
There’s blood in the river, it ruins the soil
All my friends around me, they see fit to sell
For me it ain’t that simple, this land’s all I got now
Like all who come before me, I’ll work until I die
They don’t make it easy, the cities and the factories
They piss into the river, they steal the water from the sky
But all I see is sunshine, this old tractor runs fine
There’s clouds on the horizon, I pray they come our way
The dust is all around me, its so thick that I can’t see
Where the hell I’m going, or which way I should go
Well I am a farmer, I live in the valley
I live off the water, I live off the land
Won’t you hear my voice now, won’t you feel my heart beating?
This earth is my lifeblood and you hold it in your hands
So when you think of summertime, cold ice cream and peach pie
Knee high by the fourth of July, won’t you throw a prayer my way?
When you wake early, turn south and you will see
A man down on bended knee, throwing all his prayers away

Out on the Highway
03:58
|
|||
Out on the highway, out on the street
Burning my heart like an engine in this desert heat
Everyone’s looking, looking for me
Seven day’s riding the blacktop, I’m finally free
And the summer is waiting
And the silence is everything
Missouri was freezing, Kansas took a day
New Mexico, the ladies will love and send you on your way
Arizona I’m tired, your sun is a pill
I’ll rest my body and mind in your canyons and hills
And the long night is in front of me
And the sunset’s never ending
I filled up in Barstow, the coast in my sights
Then it’s turn it around or continue the road and the ride
It’s raining up north, so down Mexico
Find some senorita to love me and never let go
And your world is behind me
And slowly I’m finding
What’s important is loving the road ahead

One More Night
03:39
|
|||
There’s a lonesome guitar playing on the radio
I try and keep this old truck on the road
My mind wanders to the night before
2 free beers and I took the door
Goodbye Houston, off to San Antone
I sing for a living and I write these songs for you
Can’t nobody carry a tune quite like I do
My throats been scratched with gravel
These words they like to travel
I’ll sing them all as I pass on through
One more night, one more song
One hundred dollars and I’ll move on
One more day on the road
Keep on moving all alone
2 sets left and I’m tired on the stage
Ain’t no bed to hold me till my grave
This whiskey tastes like gasoline
Nobody’s listening or so it seems
I just thank God I got somewhere to play
A redheaded girl steps close to my microphone
All black leather and her eyes shine like chrome
I’ll sings these songs for her
With a heart that burns
But when it’s over I’ll be going home
Repeat chorus
If you see me singing come say hello
It’s cold as hell and lonely on your own
All I got is this old guitar
Tragic words and empty bars
I wish I had something else to hold
Repeat chorus

County Lines
03:04
|
|||
I grew up without a dad, he died when I was four
Momma did a real good job of evening up the score
We worked hard cause the winter’s long and every year come harvest time
Momma’d cry and set her eyes across the county line
Oh my son, she said, We got milk and we got bread
This dirt won’t grow dust, but don’t you mind
Oh my boy, she said, Don’t you worry your little head
I’m gonna get us across them county lines
Every month on a Friday night, Mom would go to town
She needed time to unwind and let her long hair down
Once such Friday she came home with a man by the hand
She told me they were in love and she hoped I’d understand
Oh my son, she said, It’s a cold and lonely bed
Tom’s as nice a man as I could find
Oh my boy, she said, Don’t you worry your little head
Now we’re gonna cross them county lines
Living with my mom’s friend Tom, them winters weren’t so bad
We had heat and enough to eat, it was more than we’d ever had
But every night that Tom would drink corn liquor from his still
He’d get a cold look in his eyes that was fierce enough to kill
Oh my son, she said, It’s just a still out in the shed
Tom’s as rich a man as I could find
Oh my boy, she said, don’t you worry your little head
Now that we’re across them county lines
Late one nigh while fetching wood, I heard momma yell
I ran inside just in time to see where momma fell
Tom turned around with a gun in hand and a crazed look in his eye
I took my axe to his neck and ran to my momma’s side
Oh my son, she said, I see Jesus up ahead
Now you must run and you must hide
Oh my boy, she said, don’t you worry your little head
Get yourself across them county lines
Get yourself across them county lines

This Town
03:30
|
|||
There’s not a lot to do in this town
All of the factories are shutting down
They all went to Mexico and they an’t ever coming back
Left me here on the wrong side of the track
Broken windows and locked gates seem to litter all around
There’s not a lot to do in this town
There’s not a lot to do in this town
All of the good ones are in the ground
They all went to war and died, left there families behind
Others came back for suicide,
A few walk these cobbled streets, seem there feeling kind of down
There’s not a lot to do in this town
Oh, watch the sun goes down in the western sky
It’s just the harsh light in our eyes,
A cold north wind is blowing, covers us with dust,
Nothing here but faded dreams and rust
There’s not much to do in this town,
Just a bar on the corner where we drink our sorrows down
There’s church here every Sunday and a few folks go to pray
But most of us think God has moved away.
If I was to be born again, and Jesus came on down,
He wouldn’t find anything in this town
There’s not much to do in this town

Bitter Pill
04:04
|
|||
Graduated high school and ’88
Dropped out of college at Eastern State
Married my wife when the wall came down
We had us a boy and we stayed in this town
Took work at the mill back in ‘95
There was nothing in my mind but staying alive
Losing your dreams is a bitter pill
But dreams don’t matter when there’s mouths to fill
A few years later had a little girl
The pay don’t change and that’s the way of the world
You try and get by with a little less
That’s no new shoes and no new dress
Baby’s crying in the middle of the night
Brings me back to my little life
Never once thought of what I could be
Now I wonder what’s left of me
Years went by and my boy grew up
He had nothing so he signed up
It was too long before they tore that mill down
They closed the doors and they killed this town
I told my wife we would be fine
My pension would keep us from the welfare line
Then I heard on the news today
A man in New York is trying to make us pay
My little girl’s got a life to live
And I’ll be damned if I can’t give
Hot food on her pate and a future that’s bright
I got a plan to make things right
Desperation makes a lonely man
With my heart on my sleeve and a gun in my hand
I gotta take back what’s owed to me
Because you can’t eat a guarantee
Losing your dreams is a bitter pill
But dreams don’t matter when there’s mouths to fill

Home Fries
03:31
|
|||
Maybe a stack of pancakes stops the flow of heartache
always coming down the road
A double-barreled scramble is something I can handle
and who would want their coffee cold?
Waitress calls me ‘Darlin,’ I’ll have to beg your pardon
if my gaze never leaves my plate
I don’t mind the chattin’ but something seems to happen
and after all it’s getting late.
I just want some home fries
easy on the pretty eyes, Miss Mae
I just want a bear claw
and to get home by the light of day
You’re a lipstick lover, probably undercover
for a bureau’s got it out for me
Ill just get the check, calm myself a second
I would get away scot-free.
Well I know your Denver omelette is common as a comet
feels like I haven’t eaten in days
But your heels come a tappin’, I picture you in satin
forget my side of Hollandaise
I’ll just get a muffin, hope that you say nothing
thinking that i have a nervous tick
I know what you’re thinkin’, when it starts to sink in
Man, that slice of toast is thick
I just want some home fries
easy on the pretty eyes, Miss Mae
I just want a bear claw
and to get home by the light of day
You’re a lipstick lover, probably undercover
for a bureau’s got it out for me
Ill just get the check, calm myself a second
I would get away scot-free.
